Making these dolls is a special way to use extra materials. In the past, people used scraps of cloth or even corn husks. During the 19th and 20th centuries, makers used felt or velvet. They also used a soft cloth called stockinette. Many dolls feature patchwork clothing made from different colored pieces. Some dolls have very simple faces. Others might have no facial features at all. This makes the doll feel very soft and gentle.

Rag dolls have a very long history. The British Museum has a Roman rag doll. It was found in a child's grave from the 1st to 5th century AD. In America, children played with rag or corn husk dolls for a long time. This lasted from the colonial era until the early 20th century. Around 1830, mass production of dolls began. This happened because people developed a way to print colors on fabric.

In Ukraine, Poland, and Belarus, people make Motanka dolls. These are special amulet dolls used for magic beliefs. Makers tie the cloth instead of using a needle. They do this so they do not poke or hurt fate. These dolls can guard a family or bring a good marriage.

Today, many rag dolls are made in large shops. These dolls often look like the old home-made ones. They might have soft cloth bodies and patchwork clothes. One very famous example is Raggedy Ann. She first appeared in 1918 in a series of children's stories. Her brother, Raggedy Andy, was introduced in 1920.
