The Magic 8 Ball is a plastic sphere used for fortune-telling or seeking advice. It is designed to look like an oversized black-and-white billiard ball. Users interact with the device by asking yes-no questions to find answers. This novelty item has become a famous cultural reference used by many people. It serves as both a children's toy and an office toy. Even though many years have passed, the design has changed very little.

The mechanism inside the sphere relies on a floating die and liquid. A hollow plastic sphere contains a cylindrical reservoir filled with dark blue alcohol. Inside this liquid floats a white plastic die called an icosahedron. An icosahedron is a regular shape with 20 triangular faces. Each face has a message printed in raised letters. To use it, the user holds the ball with the window facing down. This allows the die to float properly within the cylinder. After asking a question, the user turns the ball so the window faces up. The die floats to the top and presses against the window. The raised letters displace the blue liquid to reveal a white message.

There are 20 possible responses built into the device. These answers were designed by Dr. Lucien Cohen, a psychology professor at the University of Cincinnati. The responses are divided into three specific categories. There are 10 affirmative answers that suggest a "yes" response. There are 5 neutral answers that do not take a side. Finally, there are 5 negative answers that suggest a "no" response. Examples of affirmative answers include "It is certain" and "Without a doubt." Neutral answers include "Reply hazy, try again" or "Ask again later." Negative answers include "My sources say no" or "Very doubtful."

The history of the Magic 8 Ball began with Albert C. Carter and Abe Bookman. Carter was inspired by a spirit writing device used by his mother. She was a clairvoyant in Cincinnati. In 1944, Carter filed a patent for a cylindrical version called The Syco-Slate. He assigned the patent in 1946 to Bookman and other partners in Alabe Crafts, Inc. Bookman made improvements to the original Syco-Slate design. In 1948, the device was encased in an iridescent crystal ball. This version was not successful, but it caught the attention of Brunswick Billiards. In 1950, they commissioned Alabe Crafts to make the black-and-white 8 ball version.

Ownership of the toy has changed several times over the decades. In 1971, Bookman sold Alabe Crafts, Inc. to the Ideal Toy Company. Ideal Toys began marketing the ball specifically to children. In 1987, the rights were sold again to Tyco Toys. This sale led to a new marketing campaign and a resurgence in interest. Tyco Toys was later acquired by Mattel in 1997. Mattel remains the current manufacturer of the device. The toy remains very popular in the modern era. In 2015, approximately one million Magic 8 Balls were sold annually.

One technical challenge with the design involved air bubbles. Original instructions warned users not to shake the ball. Shaking could cause white bubbles to form in the blue liquid. This made the messages difficult to read through the window. In 1975, the Ideal Toy Company fixed this problem. They introduced a patented "Bubble Free Die Agitator." This part is an inverted funnel that reroutes trapped air. This specific solution has been used in the design ever since.
