To do this, they use small, round capsules called paintballs. These capsules are filled with bright, colored dye. When a paintball hits a player, it breaks and leaves a mark. This mark shows that the player has been hit and is out of the game. People play paintball for fun, but many also play in serious competitions.

It is a game of skill, strategy, and quick movement.

Players use special tools called markers to shoot the paintballs.

These markers are powered by compressed air or carbon dioxide. Most markers use a part called a hopper to feed the paintballs into the gun. Some hoppers use gravity to drop the balls, while others use electronics to push them. To stay safe, every player must wear a protective mask. These masks cover the eyes, nose, and mouth to prevent serious injury.

Some players also wear gloves, knee pads, and elbow pads for extra protection.

The sport began in Henniker, New Hampshire, on June 27, 1981.

Two men named Hayes Noel and Charles Gaines invented it. They wanted to see if a city person could survive in the woods against a hunter. A friend showed them an ad for cattle marking guns. They decided to use those guns to settle their debate. Their first game was called the "Survival Game." It took place in a 100-acre forest. A player named G. Ritchie White won by collecting four flags in two hours and fifteen minutes.

There are many different ways to play the game. Woodsball is played in large, natural forests.

Speedball is played on small, flat fields with inflatable bunkers for cover. In speedball, games can be very fast, sometimes lasting only two minutes. Scenario play is different because it can last for many hours or even days. In these games, players might use vehicles like go-karts or ATVs. They might even use paint-filled balloons called paint-grenades.

Some tournaments use five-person teams playing on speedball fields. The NXL is a group that holds events across the United States. In the United Kingdom, the CPPS is a leading tournament group. Players can choose to play for recreation or join professional teams. Whether playing in a small field or a huge forest, paintball is a sport that brings people together through competition.
