Airsoft is a team game.
Players use toy guns to shoot small plastic balls. These balls are called BBs. The game started in Japan long ago.
Players must be very honest. If a BB hits you, you must say so. This keeps the game fair for everyone.
Some guns use batteries to work. Other guns use gas to shoot. Most guns look like real ones. People use them to act out stories.
Safety is very important. Players wear goggles to protect their eyes. Some people yell "Bang Bang!" if they are too close. This keeps everyone safe during the game.

Airsoft is a team game played with toy guns.
Players shoot small plastic balls called BBs at each other. These BBs are usually 6 mm wide. The game relies on an honor system. If a BB hits you, you must call yourself out. This keeps the game fair and honest.
Airsoft began in Japan in the early 1970s. A man named Ichiro Nagata wanted to make model guns. He wanted them to shoot real projectiles that could not kill. Later, a company called Tokyo Marui made electric guns. These used batteries to fire quickly. This helped the game grow into a popular hobby.
There are many ways to power these guns. Some use batteries, which are called AEGs. Others use gas or even high-pressure air.
Many guns look like real ones. This makes them great for military simulations. Some groups, like the U.S. Coast Guard, even use them for training.
Safety is the most important part. Players must wear goggles to protect their eyes.
Some fields have rules for close play. Players might yell "Bang Bang!" to stay safe. This prevents injury when players are very close.
Airsoft is a team-based shooting game that people play for fun.
Players use imitation guns to shoot small plastic spheres called BBs. These BBs are usually 6 mm in diameter. The game is very popular in Japan. Unlike paintball, these plastic pellets do not leave visible marks on players. Because hits are not always easy to see, the game relies on an honor system. This means players must be honest and call themselves out when they are hit. This keeps the game fair and shows good sportsmanship.
There are many ways to make these guns work. Some use a battery to power an electric motor. These are called Automatic Electric Guns, or AEGs. Other guns use compressed gas, like propane or CO2. These are often called Gas Blowback guns. Some even use a high-pressure air tank, known as HPA.
Most guns are made of plastic or aluminum. This makes them much lighter than real metal guns. Many players also "tech" their guns. This means they change or improve parts to make them work better.
Airsoft started in Japan during the early 1970s. A photographer named Ichiro Nagata wanted to create something special. He wanted to make model guns that could shoot real projectiles safely. He called them "soft air" guns. The name came from the gas mixture used to push the pellets. Later, a company called Tokyo Marui changed the hobby. They made a new electric gearbox that used rechargeable batteries. This allowed guns to fire very quickly. This invention helped the game become a popular wargame.
The game has spread all over the world. It moved to the United Kingdom in the late 1980s. From there, it reached Europe and North America. Today, many people use airsoft for more than just play. Some police and military groups use it for training. For example, the United States Coast Guard began using airsoft for training in 2018. It is a cheaper and safer way to practice moving in teams. Most of the replica guns are made in East Asia.
Safety is the most important part of every game.
Players must wear goggles to protect their eyes. Before a game, experts check the speed of the guns. They use a tool called a chronograph to measure this. They look at the muzzle velocity in feet per second or joules. This ensures the pellets do not have too much energy. Some fields also have rules for close combat. Players might yell "Bang Bang!" if they are too close to someone. This helps prevent any small bruises or welts on the skin.
Airsoft, often called a survival game, is a team-based shooting sport.
Participants use imitation firearms to shoot spherical plastic projectiles at opposing players. The goal is to eliminate the other team through accurate shooting. Because the plastic pellets do not leave visible marks on clothing, the sport relies on an honor system. This system requires players to honestly call themselves out when hit. This practice maintains fairness, honesty, and good sportsmanship during matches.
Airsoft guns function through several different mechanical principles. Some are spring-loaded, meaning a user must manually cock them to build energy. Others are Automatic Electric Guns, or AEGs, which use rechargeable batteries to power an internal motor and gearbox. Gas-powered models use replaceable canisters of compressed gas, such as propane or CO2. Some advanced replicas use High-Pressure Air (HPA) from a large tank to power a Fire Control Unit, or FCU, computer board. These HPA systems allow for a high number of Rounds Per Second (RPS) and great durability.
To improve performance, many players use a system called a "hop-up." This mechanism uses a small rubber nub inside the barrel to apply backspin to the pellet. This backspin utilizes the Magnus effect, which creates extra lift to counteract gravity. By adjusting the nub, players can make the pellets fly further in a straight line. Without a hop-up, pellets might drop too quickly or curve upward. This adjustment is vital for effective long-range shooting.
Airsoft originated in Japan during the early 1970s. A photographer named Ichiro Nagata wanted to create model guns that shot real projectiles safely. He called them "soft air" guns because of the weak propellant gas used. The name originally referred to a mixture of Freon and silicone oil. Later, the company Tokyo Marui revolutionized the hobby with an electric motor-gearbox design. This allowed for sustainable rapid-fire shooting. From Japan, the hobby spread to the United Kingdom in the late 1980s and eventually reached North America and Europe.
Safety is strictly managed through technical measurements and gear.
Before play, officials use a chronograph to measure a gun's muzzle velocity. This is measured in feet per second (FPS) or in joules, which represents kinetic energy. Many countries have legal limits on how much energy a gun can produce. Players must also wear protective goggles that seal around the eyes. At close distances, players may use verbal phrases like "Bang Bang!" to avoid causing bruises or welts on the skin.
Players often customize their equipment for better aim or realism. They might add red dot sights, fore-grips, or flashlights to their replicas. While some use mock suppressors to look realistic, they do not actually dampen sound. The projectiles, known as BBs, are typically 5.95mm in diameter. Most players use weights between 0.20g and 0.32g for standard play. Heavier rounds, such as 0.40g, are used by snipers for better stability against the wind.
Beyond recreation, airsoft has significant professional applications. It is used for military simulation (MilSim) and historical reenactments. Some law enforcement agencies use it for force-on-force tactical training. These drills are often safer and less expensive than using real ammunition. For example, the United States Coast Guard officially adopted airsoft for training in 2018. This shows how a hobby can evolve into a serious tool for professional skill development.
