Most games involve two to ten players working together. The goal is to find clues and solve puzzles to finish a task. Sometimes the goal is simply to escape the room. The rooms use fun themes like pirate ships or space stations. Players must finish everything before a timer runs out. Most games last between 45 and 60 minutes. Some longer rooms can last up to two hours.

Playing the game is a big adventure for your brain. You do not need to be a fast runner to play. Instead, you need to be a good thinker. Puzzles might use math, geography, or even chemistry. You might solve word games like crosswords or Sudoku. Some puzzles use physical objects like jigsaw puzzles or chess. You might even have to find a hidden object in a maze. If your team gets stuck, a gamemaster can help. They can give you hints through video, audio, or in person.

Another important version was called Real Escape Game. Takao Kato created this in Kyoto, Japan, in 2007. He used logic puzzles like math sequences. In Spain, a company called Differend Games opened rooms in 2003. Later, a teacher named Gabriel Palacios made scientific escape games. He shared these games with twenty different countries.

Today, escape rooms use very cool technology. Some rooms use virtual reality to make things feel real. Other rooms use live actors to tell a story. You might even see messages written in invisible ink. To see them, you might use a special blacklight. Some games have "good endings" if you win. This might mean you escape alive or stop a bad character. If you fail, you might get a "bad ending." This can mean the story's villain catches you. It is all part of the fun of the game.
