In a social deduction game, players try to find out everyone's hidden roles. Most of these games use two teams. One team is called the "good" team and the other is the "bad" team. Players use logic to figure out who is on which side. However, players on the bad team can bluff to hide their true identity. This means they might tell lies to keep others from suspecting them. Some games even have many different teams or unique roles for every single person.

These games often use a special way of talking. There is usually a time for private secrets and a time for public talk. In the public phase, players can make accusations in a "public square." You might have to decide how long to stick to your story. This is a big part of the strategy. If you get new information, you must decide if your old story still works. Some people even use math to help make decisions in these games. If you play many rounds, you might start to learn how your friends act. This is called meta-gaming, where you think about past rounds to win the next one.

Social deduction games grew out of old party games. One very old game is called wink murder. In that game, a secret player "kills" others by winking at them. Later, card games like Hoax arrived in 1981. In Hoax, players could lie about which of seven characters they were playing. Another famous game is Mafia, which started in 1986. It actually began as a psychological experiment in Russia. It became a very popular card game about good and bad teams. Many people say that almost every game since then was inspired by Mafia.

There are many different types of these games to explore. In the game Bang!, only the sheriff's role is known to everyone. In Secret Hitler, the fascists know each other, but they do not know who Hitler is. There are many board games like The Resistance or Avalon. You can also find video games like Town of Salem or Space Station 13. Some games were even made as custom maps for StarCraft. These maps helped inspire many other games on different computers. Even television shows like The Mole use these same ideas to create excitement.

Video games changed how we play these social games. A game called Among Us was released in 2018. It became huge in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was because it helped people stay social while they stayed apart. One big improvement in Among Us was adding active tasks. Players must complete tasks while they look for the impostors. This makes the game feel very different from a simple card game. Whether you use cards or a computer, the goal is the same. You must use your mind to find the truth hidden in plain sight.
