A jigsaw puzzle is a fun way to build a picture.

You take many small pieces and fit them together. Most pieces have a part of a picture on them. When you finish, the whole image is complete. People love them because they are a great way to relax. They also help people learn how to think about shapes and space. Some people even compete to see who can solve them the fastest.

Making a puzzle is a very careful job.

Many modern puzzles are made of paperboard. First, a picture is glued to a piece of cardboard. Then, a machine uses a puzzle die to cut the shapes. A puzzle die is like a giant cookie cutter. It has many hardened steel blades that press through the board. This makes sure every piece fits snugly with its neighbors. Some makers now use lasers to cut wood or plastic instead.

Jigsaw puzzles have a very long history.

A man named John Spilsbury lived in London around 1760. He was a map maker and an engraver. He created the first puzzles to help students learn geography. He would paint a map on wood and cut it into pieces. These were called "dissections." A teacher named Lady Charlotte Finch even used them to teach the children of King George III.

There are many different kinds of puzzles to find.

Some are flat, but others are three-dimensional. A 3-D puzzle might be shaped like a round globe. You might also find "family puzzles" with different sized pieces. These let children and adults work on the same puzzle together. Some wooden puzzles even have pieces shaped like animals. These special shapes are called "whimsies." Puzzles can have hundreds or even thousands of pieces.

Puzzles are more than just a game. They have been used in science to study how children think. During the Great Depression, they were a cheap way to have fun. Today, people use them to look at beautiful art. You can even frame a finished puzzle to hang on your wall. Some people buy very expensive puzzles for charity. They are a wonderful way to bring people together.
