You must fit many small pieces together. When you finish, they form a large picture.

Long ago, puzzles were made of wood.

A man named John Spilsbury made them around 1760. He used maps to help students learn geography. These early puzzles were called dissections. Later, people used saws to cut them. The name "jigsaw" comes from these cutting tools.

Most puzzles today are made of cardboard.

Machines use a puzzle die to cut the pieces. This die is like a large cookie cutter. It uses steel blades to press through the board. This way, the pieces fit together very snugly.

There are many kinds of puzzles. Some are flat, but others are 3-D.

A 3-D puzzle might look like a round globe. Some wooden puzzles even have pieces shaped like animals. These special pieces are called whimsies. People even hold contests to see who can solve them fastest!
