Early artists painted on thin skin called vellum. Later, they used ivory or even pieces of bone.

People gave these miniatures as special gifts. Families used them to stay close when loved ones were away. For example, a son might go to war. A daughter might get married and move far away. Some kings gave them as political gifts to other leaders.

Because they were small, people could carry them easily. You might find a miniature inside a locket or a watch. Some were even put on the covers of snuff boxes.
