Fouquet was the first French artist to visit Italy. He saw new ways to paint there. He brought these ideas back to France. This helped start a new school of art.

He worked for many important people. He painted for King Charles VII. He also painted for King Louis XI. One of his big works is the Melun Diptych. A diptych is a painting in two parts.

The left part shows a man named Étienne Chevalier. The right part shows the Virgin Mary and Child. Many people think the Virgin is a portrait of Agnès Sorel. Fouquet was also very good at making portraits. He made a tiny self-portrait of himself. This is one of the oldest small self-portraits in Western art. His work is known for being very clear and fine.
