He lived during a time of big changes in art. This was the period between the late Gothic and early Renaissance. Fouquet was a master of two main things. He painted large pictures on wood panels. He also made tiny, beautiful art inside books. This small art is called manuscript illumination. He is even thought to be the inventor of the portrait miniature. This is a very small painting of a person. His work is famous for being very clear and detailed.

Fouquet used many different ways to make his art. He was an expert at rendering fine details. He could show a person's character on a tiny scale. He also combined different styles of painting. He took the Tuscan style from Italy and mixed it with the style of the Van Eycks. This mix helped start a new school of art in France. He used oil on wood for some of his large works. For example, his Melun Diptych uses oil on wood. A diptych is a painting made in two parts.

Not much is known about how Fouquet started his career. He was born in the city of Tours. Some people think he studied in Paris. Others think he studied under the Jouvenal Master in Nantes. Between 1445 and 1447, he traveled to Italy. This was a very big step for a French artist. In Italy, he saw the work of artists like Fra Angelico. He also saw the work of Filarete. These artists were part of the early Italian Renaissance. He even painted a portrait of Pope Eugene IV before 1447.

Fouquet worked for many powerful people in France. He painted for King Charles VII and King Louis XI. He also worked for Étienne Chevalier, who was a treasurer. Another patron was Guillaume Jouvenel des Ursins. His art helped show a strong French identity. This was important after the long Hundred Years' War with England. One painting shows King Charles VII as one of the three magi. Some say the other magi were the king's son and brother. He also made forty miniatures for the Hours of Étienne Chevalier in 1461.

Today, we can find Fouquet's art in many museums. The Louvre in Paris holds his oil portraits. They also have his small book paintings. The Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp has part of his diptych. This includes the side with the Virgin and Child. Many people believe this is a portrait of Agnès Sorel. His self-portrait is a very special piece of history. It is one of the earliest small self-portraits in Western art. His skill helped change how people painted in France forever.
