These works are very important to artists. They can show off a person's skill to new clients. Many artists also give these portraits as gifts to friends or family.

Sometimes, an artist does not make a single portrait of just their face. They might include themselves in a much larger group scene. They could appear as a face in a crowd or a person in a story. This lets the artist test their skill in front of a public audience.

In the past, mirrors were hard to find or very expensive. Better and cheaper mirrors helped painters see themselves more clearly. This helped them create more accurate pictures. Some artists even hide themselves in mirrors within a larger painting. This is a clever way to show they were there. Today, artists can even use video to make self-portraits. This lets people see and hear the artist's own voice.

People have been making self-portraits for a very long time. In ancient times, a sculptor named Bak made one in 1365 BC.

In Europe, self-portraits became very popular during the Renaissance. This happened because people became more interested in the individual. Artists like Jan van Eyck made early versions on wood panels. His painting from 1433 might be the earliest known panel self-portrait. He even hid a tiny version of himself in a mirror. This was a very modern idea for that time.

Many famous artists are known for their many self-portraits. Albrecht Dürer was a very prolific artist who made many images. He made a silverpoint drawing of himself when he was only thirteen.

In 1493, he painted a portrait of himself holding a thistle. He also made many prints that carried his famous monogram. Rembrandt was another artist who made a huge number of them. He even painted himself with his wife, Saskia, in a family scene. These works helped build his reputation as a great artist.

Women artists have also left many important self-portraits behind. Most significant women painters have made works of themselves.
