A Persian miniature is a small, detailed painting on paper.

These artworks can be illustrations inside a book or single pieces kept in an album called a muraqqa.

Because these paintings were often kept in private books, they were meant for a small group of people. This allowed artists to show many human figures freely. These figures might be part of a grand battle or a quiet garden scene. The art is famous for its bright, pure colors. Most pigments come from ground minerals, which helps the colors stay strong for centuries.

Creating these works was a careful, step-by-step job. Often, a group of artists worked together in a workshop. One main painter would draw the outlines of the scene. Then, less senior painters would fill in the colors. In some traditions, a third artist might even specialize just in painting faces.

Beyond the main picture, artists added decoration called illumination. This included beautiful patterns on the borders or the start of a section. These designs often looked like Persian carpets or fine book covers.

This art style became very important in the 13th century. It grew even more after the Mongol conquests brought influences from China. The tradition reached its highest point during the 15th and 16th centuries.

Later, the style changed as artists moved from making big books to making single album miniatures. This change happened partly because rulers like Shah Tahmasp I stopped commissioning large illustrated books in the 1540s. This allowed more people to collect these beautiful pieces.

There are many specific rules for how these paintings look. The lighting is always even, so you will not see dark shadows. Buildings are often shown at a 45-degree angle, which can look strange to us today. Artists also used "cutaway" views to show the inside of a building through a window.

To show depth, artists placed more distant figures higher up on the page. Landscapes often feature high, wavy mountains and rocky outcrops. These details were inspired by Chinese art styles.

Persian miniatures had a huge impact on the wider world. They were the main influence on Ottoman miniatures in Turkey and Mughal miniatures in India. For example, the Mughal prince Humayun took Persian artists with him to India. This helped start a new tradition of painting there.

Today, many of these precious works are kept in museums in the West and in Turkey. They remain a wonderful way to see the history and stories of the past.
