It is a collection of beautiful paintings called miniatures. These small artworks illustrate the Shahnameh, which is the national epic poem of Greater Iran. The book was a huge and very ambitious project. Experts say its illustrations have a special kind of emotional intensity. People admire the skill and the grand style used by the artists. It was meant to be a masterpiece for the leaders of the time.

Making this book involved many careful steps and different artistic styles.

The artists used paper to create their work. They painted with ink lines and colored washes or used thick watercolor. Some paintings have unusual shapes, like "stepped" edges that fit the subject. The text is written in six columns on each page. Most of the paintings stretch across the whole width of the page. They are placed at different heights to tell the story.

This book was created during the time of the Ilkhanid dynasty.

This group ruled Persia as part of the larger Mongol Empire. The work likely came from a workshop in the city of Tabriz. Some scholars believe it was made in the 1330s. It might have been started by the son of a man named Rašīd-al-Dīn. The project was likely a gift for a very important ruler. It showed that the Mongol leaders cared about Persian culture.

The paintings show many interesting details and different ideas.

Some paintings show kings with halos, which are circles of light. The scenes often focus on the story of Iskandar, who was like Alexander the Great. Other scenes show important moments like the crowning of kings.

Today, the Great Mongol Shahnameh is not one single book.

In the early 20th century, a dealer named George Demotte broke it up. Now, there are only 57 individual pages left. These pages are kept in many different collections around the world. Some of the pages were even changed or tampered with. Even though it is in pieces, it remains a famous treasure. It helps us learn about art and history from long ago.
