Writing this poem was a huge task for the poet Ferdowsi. He began his work in 977. He finished the poem on March 8, 1010. The poem is made of about 50,000 couplets. A couplet is a pair of rhyming lines. This makes it one of the longest poems ever written by one person. It is much longer than the Iliad.

Ferdowsi used older stories to build his poem. He based his work on a prose book called the Khwadāy-Nāmag. This was the "Book of Kings" from the Sasanian era. He also used other Pahlavi sources. One was the Kar-Namag i Ardashir i Pabagan. This book told how Ardashir I came to power. Ferdowsi even included verses from another poet named Daqiqi.

The poem tells many different kinds of stories. The first part is the mythical age. It describes the creation of the world and the first man, Keyumars. Then comes the heroic age. This part covers two-thirds of the whole book. It features famous heroes like Rostam. Rostam is known as the bravest of the brave. There are also stories about the historical age and the Sasanian kings.

The Shahnameh has a huge impact on the Persian language. Ferdowsi purposefully avoided many Arabic words. He used words that were distinctly Persian. This helped keep the language strong for over a thousand years. The poem also teaches many good values. These include patriotism and helping the poor. Many leaders in the past were influenced by these stories. Even the founder of the Safavid dynasty, Shah Ismail I, was deeply moved by it.
