He is known as the greatest romantic epic poet in Persian literature. An epic is a very long story that often tells of heroes. Nizami brought a new, realistic style to these grand tales. His writing feels fresh and full of vigor even today. Many people in Iran, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, and the Kurdistan region cherish his work.

His stories help people feel a deep sense of cultural pride.

Nizami was a very learned man often called Hakim, which means "the Sage."

He did not just write poems about feelings. He studied many difficult subjects to make his stories better. His work shows he knew about math and the stars. He also understood medicine, plants, and even alchemy. He used these facts to make his worlds feel real. He even borrowed ideas from Greek, Christian, and Jewish histories. He mixed these different parts into one beautiful whole.

Very little is known about his early life.

Most of what we know comes from his own poems. He was likely born between 1140 and 1146. His father was named Yusuf and his mother was named Ra'isa. His mother was of Kurdish origin. Nizami was orphaned when he was young. His uncle, Khwaja Umar, took him in. His uncle made sure he received an excellent education.

Nizami lived in a city called Ganja.

He was married three times during his life. His first wife was a woman named Afaq, though some scholars debate this name. They had one son named Mohammad. Sadly, Nizami's wives died at the same time he finished his great poems. He once wondered why he had to sacrifice a wife for every mathnavi, which is a type of poem.
