It is known as the longest historical epic poem ever published. One version contains about 500,000 lines and 2.5 million words. This makes it 20 times longer than the Greek stories of the Odyssey and Iliad combined. The poem is a monumental part of oral tradition. It is kept alive by special storytellers called manaschy. These bards tell the long tale through a melodic chant. They do not use any musical instruments to help them.

The story is divided into three main books. The first book tells the adventures of the hero Manas. The second book describes the deeds of his son, Semetey. The third book follows his grandson, Seitek. The plot begins with the difficulties caused by Oirat invaders. Manas grows up to be a strong and generous leader. He is eventually elected as a khan to lead his people. He rallies the Kyrgyz and helps them return to their ancestral lands. The poem also describes his many travels and his relationships with other groups.

Scholars have debated how old this epic really is. Because it was told out loud for a long time, it was not written down right away. Some Kyrgyz traditions say the story is very ancient. However, many historians believe it might be younger. Some think the events in the poem happened in the 16th or 17th centuries. Others suggest it was compiled in the late 18th century. In 1995, the government of Kyrgyzstan celebrated the 1,000th anniversary of the poem being documented. This shows how much the people value its history.

There are many famous manaschy who have performed this epic. Some of the most well-known names include Sayakbay Karalaev and Sagymbai Orozbak uulu. One modern performer, Doolot Sydykov, once performed for 111 hours over five days! There are more than 65 different written versions of parts of the poem. The first sound recording of the poem was made in 1902 and 1903. Today, the epic is recognized by UNESCO in the Memory of the World Programme. It has even been translated into 20 different languages around the world.

The legacy of Manas is seen all over Kyrgyzstan today. Many people visit a special building called the Dome of Manas near Talas.

This site is believed to be the resting place of the hero. The name of the epic is also used for many important things. For example, the main international airport in Bishkek is named Manas International Airport. There is even a university named after the epic. A small planet in space was also named 3349 Manas. This shows how the story stays part of life in many ways.
