It is the oldest major work of French literature still known today. This poem is a chanson de geste, which means a song of heroic deeds. These stories were very popular in Medieval Europe from the 11th to the 16th centuries. People loved them because they celebrated legendary feats and brave actions. The poem is long, containing about 4,000 lines of Old French verse.

It is now recognized as the national epic of France.

The story follows a brave leader named Roland. Roland was the nephew of the great King Charlemagne. The plot begins when Charlemagne's army fights in Spain for seven years. King Marsile of Saragossa tries to make peace with the Franks. However, a man named Ganelon betrays Roland by helping the enemy. Ganelon tells the Saracens how to ambush Roland's group at Roncevaux Pass.

This betrayal leads to a very difficult battle for the soldiers.

During the fight, Roland's friend Oliver asks him to call for help. Roland is hesitant to blow his horn at first. Eventually, Archbishop Turpin tells him that he must call the army. Roland blows his olifant, which is a horn made from an elephant tusk.

He blows it so hard that his temples begin to bleed. Even though Charlemagne hears the call and returns, Roland dies from his wounds. The poem describes how angels lift his soul to Paradise.

Scholars have studied when this poem was actually written. Many believe it was composed between AD 1040 and AD 1115. Some think a poet named Turold might have written it. There is one main surviving manuscript held at the Bodleian Library in Oxford. This specific manuscript dates between 1129 and 1165. It was written in Anglo-Norman rather than pure Old French.

Other smaller fragments and manuscripts of the story also exist.

The poem uses a special way of writing called laisses. These are stanzas of irregular length that use assonance. This means the end sounds of the lines match using vowels. The poem also uses a lot of repetition and parallelism. This makes the story move very fast, almost like a modern film. It focuses on what characters do rather than what they think. This style helps the reader feel the action of the great deeds.
