It is the longest epic poem in the world. One version has about 500,000 lines. This is much longer than the famous Greek stories. Special storytellers called manaschy keep the tale alive. They do not use instruments. Instead, they tell the story through a melodic chant.

The poem is split into three main parts. It tells of the hero Manas. It also tells of his son, Semetey, and his grandson, Seitek. The story follows their many adventures and battles. Some people believe the story is very old. Other historians think it was written more recently. Even so, it is very important to Kyrgyz culture. In 1995, the government celebrated its 1,000th anniversary. People even visit a special dome near Talas.
