It was put together by a man named Sîn-lēqi-unninni.

The tale follows Gilgamesh, the king of Uruk. He is two-thirds god and one-third man. The gods made a wild man named Enkidu to challenge him.

Instead of fighting, the two become best friends. They travel to a Cedar Forest and fight a guardian named Humbaba. After Enkidu dies, Gilgamesh is very sad. He goes on a long trip to find the secret of eternal life. He meets Utnapishtim, a man who survived a great flood. Gilgamesh learns that humans cannot live forever. This story is a very important hero tale. It helped shape other famous stories in history.
