The Enuma Elish is a very old story. It tells how the world began. People call it a creation myth. This story comes from ancient Babylon. It was written on seven clay tablets. These tablets use a script called cuneiform. This means marks made on clay.

The story starts with a dark, watery place. Two beings lived there. They were Apsu and Tiamat. Soon, many new gods were born. These gods were very loud. Their noise upset Apsu. He wanted to destroy them. But a god named Ea stopped him. Ea made a spell to make Apsu sleep. Then, Ea and his wife made a new god. His name was Marduk.

Marduk was very bright and strong. He fought in a big battle. The story says he made the stars and the sun. He also made the moon and planets. Marduk even helped make people. One part of the story says people were made from a god's blood. This myth was found in ruins at Nineveh. It was found by an explorer named Austen Henry Layard. It is a big part of history.
