The Enuma Elish is a very famous creation myth from ancient Babylon. It is a story that explains how the world and its people began. This myth is known as the most complete account of how ancient people saw the universe.

The title of the story comes from its first words, which mean "When on High." It was written in a script called cuneiform on seven clay tablets. These tablets contain about one thousand lines of text.

Even though some parts are missing, it is a very important piece of history.

The story describes a world that starts with darkness and water. At first, only two beings existed together in this watery place. These beings were named Apsu and Tiamat. As more gods were born, they became very loud and active. This noise upset Apsu, so he wanted to destroy the new gods. However, a god named Ea used a spell to make Apsu sleep.

From Ea and his wife, a powerful god named Marduk was born. Marduk eventually fought a great battle to bring order to the world. He is said to have created the stars, the sun, and the moon.

Archaeologists found these tablets in the ruins of the Library of Ashurbanipal. This library was located in a place called Nineveh, which is in modern-day Iraq.

An English explorer named Austen Henry Layard found the fragments in 1849. Later, an expert named George Smith published a version of the myth in 1876. Smith worked with many thousands of small clay fragments to piece the story together. He even found stories about a great flood in the tablets. His work helped people understand how these ancient stories were written.

Many different people have studied these tablets over the years. A man named L.W. King published a famous collection of these texts in 1901 and 1902. He showed that the myth was divided into five main parts. These parts include the birth of the gods and a hymn praising Marduk.

Other researchers found more pieces of the tablets in Germany between 1902 and 1914. These new finds helped experts correct what they knew about the characters. For example, they learned that a god named Kingu was involved in the creation of humans. These discoveries made the story much clearer to historians.

Learning about the Enuma Elish helps us see how people thought long ago. It shows us how ancient cultures explained things like the planets and the rivers. Some people have even looked for links between these stories and the Bible. For instance, the way humans were made in the myth is sometimes compared to other old stories.

Even today, researchers still study these clay tablets to learn more. The stories tell us about the many gods that people once honored. It is a wonderful way to connect with the past through writing.
