Marduk was a very important god from ancient Mesopotamia. He was the patron deity of the city of Babylon. This means he was the special protector of that city. In the very beginning, during the 3rd millennium BC, he was not well known. He was only mentioned a few times in old records. An unnamed ruler once built a temple for him in a place called BAR.KI.BAR.

As time passed, the way people saw Marduk changed a lot. Some people thought he started as a god of the underworld. Others believed he was a god of storms or farming. Eventually, he became a god of many things. People worshipped him for magic, medicine, and justice. He was also a god of water and creation. His symbol was a tool called a spade.

History shows how Marduk slowly rose to power. During the Old Babylonian period, he was not yet the leader of all gods. A god named Enlil was still the highest authority then. However, Marduk started appearing more in people's names. By the time of the Kassite period, his popularity grew even more. Kings began to use his name in many ways. He was also linked to the planet Jupiter in the stars.

Many famous stories and names belong to Marduk. He had about 50 symbolic names. These names were like special titles. Some called him the "king of the gods of heaven and earth." Other names called him the "creator of mankind." One big story is called the Enūma Eliš. This creation myth tells how he became a great ruler. It says he became king after defeating Tiamat.
