Anu was a god of the sky in ancient Mesopotamia. His name means "sky" in the Sumerian language. Many people saw him as the king of all gods. They believed he gave the right to rule to kings on Earth.

Anu was a very important figure, but he was often quiet. In many old stories, he did not do much. People did not always pray to him. Some thinkers say he was a figurehead. This means he was a leader in name, but other gods held more power. For example, the god Enlil was often more active.

Later in history, things changed in the city of Uruk. People began to see Anu as an active god. They started to worship him more often.

Anu had many different wives in different stories. Some people said his wife was the goddess Ki. Others said his wife was Urash or Antu. All of these goddesses represented the earth. This made Anu the sky and his wives the ground.
