People used chains to keep watches safe. The chain attaches to a belt or a jacket. This stops the watch from being dropped. In the 1800s, railroads used pocket watches to stay on time. They needed very accurate watches for their work. One company made watches with interchangeable parts. This means the small pieces could be easily swapped. This made them cheaper to fix and buy.
