To wind it, you would open the back and fit the key onto a square part called an arbor. Some watches used a device called a fusee to keep time steady. A fusee is a cone-shaped pulley connected to the mainspring by a fine chain. This helps provide a uniform amount of force as the spring unwinds.

In 1462, a clockmaker named Bartholomew Manfredi wrote about a "pocket clock." By 1526, a master locksmith named Peter Henlein was making pocket watches in Nuremberg. Early versions were called "clock-watches" and were shaped like heavy brass drums. They were quite large and often worn on chains around the neck.

Later, they became rounded and were called "Nuremberg eggs." In 1675, King Charles II of England introduced waistcoats. This change helped the watch move from a neck pendant into a pocket.

In 1857, the American Watch Company in Waltham, Massachusetts, made a big change. They created the Waltham Model 57, which was the first watch to use interchangeable parts. This made it much cheaper to build and fix watches.

By 1865, the American watch industry was making many reliable watches each year. This helped the United States compete with the Swiss makers. Accuracy became very important, especially for people working on railroads. In 1893, strict standards were set for watches used by railroad workers.

There are two main styles of pocket watches you might see today.

The first is the open-face watch, which has no metal cover over the glass. The second is the hunter-case watch. This style has a metal lid that snaps shut to protect the face. The name comes from men in England who hunted foxes. They needed to open the watch with one hand while holding horse reins with the other. There is also a "demi-hunter" style. This has a tiny glass window in the lid so you can see the time without opening it.

The mechanical evolution of the pocket watch began with the development of spring-driven clocks in Italy and Germany by the end of the 15th century. Early timepieces were large, heavy brass cylinders several inches in diameter. These were known as "clock-watches" and were worn as pendants on chains around the neck.

These early models only featured an hour hand. They lacked glass covers, using instead a hinged brass cover with decorative pierced grillwork. The internal movements were constructed of iron or steel using tapered pins and wedges. After 1550, manufacturers began using screws to hold the movements together. As the shape evolved into a rounded form, they became known as "Nuremberg eggs."

As designs changed, the physical form of the watch adapted to new fashions. In 1675, Charles II of England introduced the waistcoat. This garment encouraged men to move their watches from their necks into their pockets. To fit comfortably, watches became rounded and flattened without sharp edges. Women's watches often remained in the pendant style into the 20th century. They frequently used a watch fob, which was a short leather strap. These fobs were often more decorative than protective, whereas men's fobs served more practical purposes.

Precision improved through several key mechanical advancements. Until the 1720s, most movements relied on the verge escapement. This mechanism was developed for large public clocks in the 14th century. However, it created high levels of friction and lacked jeweling to protect contacting surfaces. This meant verge watches rarely achieved high accuracy.

The cylinder escapement, developed by the Abbé de Hautefeuille and used by George Graham, provided an early improvement. Later, Thomas Mudge invented the lever escapement in 1755. This design allowed a domestic watch to keep time within a minute per day. By 1820, lever watches became common, and this mechanism is still used in most mechanical watches today.

Manufacturing methods underwent a revolution in the mid-19th century. In 1857, the American Watch Company in Waltham, Massachusetts, introduced the Waltham Model 57. This was the first watch to utilize interchangeable parts. This innovation significantly reduced the costs of both manufacturing and repair.

Many of these watches were made of coin silver, a 90% pure silver alloy. By 1865, the American industry was producing over 50,000 reliable watches annually. This high production volume challenged the Swiss industry. Consequently, Swiss makers shifted their focus toward high-end precision and accuracy to maintain their market position.

Accuracy became a matter of life and death with the rise of American railroading. In 1891, a train wreck occurred in Kipton, Ohio, because an engineer's watch had stopped for four minutes.

In response, Webb C. Ball was appointed Chief Time Inspector. This led to the 1893 adoption of the General Railroad Timepiece Standards. Railroad-grade pocket watches had to meet these strict requirements to ensure safe travel. This era solidified the pocket watch as a critical tool for industrial synchronization.

Today, we categorize pocket watches into two primary styles based on their cases. The first is the open-face watch, or Lépine style. This case lacks a metal cover to protect the crystal.

The second is the hunter-case watch, also called a "savonnette." This style features a spring-hinged metal lid that protects the dial from dust and scratches. The name comes from English fox hunters who needed to read the time with one hand while holding horse reins. A variation called the demi-hunter includes a small glass window in the lid. This allows the user to see the hands without opening the cover.
