Long ago, watches were mechanical. This means they used clockwork to work. They used a mainspring for power. A small wheel called a balance wheel kept time. In 1657, a new spring made them better. This helped watches stay very accurate.
In the 1960s, a new kind of watch arrived. These are quartz watches. They use a battery for power. They also use a tiny quartz crystal to keep time. 
Now we have smartwatches. These are small computers you wear on your wrist. They have touchscreens. They can do much more than tell time. Some can track your heart. Others use Bluetooth to talk to other devices.

People have been making watches for a very long time. The first wearable timepieces appeared in the 16th century in German cities. A clockmaker named Peter Henlein is often credited with inventing the watch. In 1657, a new balance spring helped watches become much more accurate. This invention, disputed by Robert Hooke and Christiaan Huygens, reduced errors from several hours a day to about 10 minutes per day. This allowed the minute hand to appear on watch faces in Britain around 1680. Later, the lever escapement became a major breakthrough. Although Thomas Mudge invented it in 1754, it only became common around 1800. 
In the 19th century, manufacturing methods evolved rapidly. The British used mass-production techniques and duplicating tools starting in 1843. In the United States, Aaron Lufkin Dennison began using interchangeable parts in a Massachusetts factory in 1851. This led to the successful Waltham Watch Company by 1861. During this era, inventors also worked to eliminate separate winding keys. Thomas Prest patented a pendant-winding mechanism in 1820. Adolphe Nicole patented a widely used keyless work in London in 1844. Jean-Adrien Philippe also presented a crown-winding mechanism in 1842.
While men traditionally used pocket watches, wristwatches had a different history. The concept dates back to the 16th century. In 1571, Elizabeth I of England received an "armed watch" from Robert Dudley. Early wristwatches were almost exclusively worn by women. The first Swiss wristwatch was made by Patek Philippe in 1868. However, the First World War changed everything for men. Soldiers needed to synchronize movements, such as the creeping barrage artillery tactic. 
Innovation continued with the development of automatic and electric watches. John Harwood invented the first successful self-winding system in 1923. This allowed a watch to wind itself through movement. In the 1950s, the Elgin and Hamilton companies pioneered electric watches. These used a battery to power the oscillation of the balance wheel. In the 2010s, a new category emerged: smartwatches. These are small wrist-worn computers with touchscreens.
Today, watches connect to many different technologies and fields. Smartwatches can incorporate GPS for location or Bluetooth for connectivity. Some even include heart-rate monitoring or calculators.
