It has a U-shaped metal loop called a shackle. This loop goes through a hole to hold things shut.

Padlocks are very old. Some date back to the Roman Era. Early locks in China were made from bronze. They used keys or even letter combinations to open.

Many different ways exist to lock a padlock. Some use rotating disks. A key turns the disks until they line up. This lets the shackle slide out. Other locks use a lever mechanism. This uses metal parts to hold the shackle in place.

Modern locks can be electronic. Some use a phone or a fingerprint to open.

Other locks use a steel cable. This helps secure large things like a bicycle. Some people even use padlocks to show love. They attach them to bridges to show their love is permanent.
