A pin tumbler lock is a very common way to stay safe.

These locks use many small metal pins. Inside the lock, there is a part called a plug. The plug sits inside an outer casing.

Most locks have five or six holes. These holes hold key pins of different lengths. Above the key pins are driver pins. Springs push these pins down into the plug. This stops the plug from turning. The spot where the plug and casing meet is the shear point.

To open the lock, you need the right key. The key has special cuts on it. When you slide the key in, it lifts the pins. If the key is right, the pins line up at the shear point. This lets the plug rotate freely.

Some locks use a spacer pin. This is a third pin that sits between the others. These special locks can work with two different keys. One key might be for a single person. A master key can open many different locks. This is helpful in big buildings like hotels. Linus Yale Jr. helped make the design we use today.
