A lever tumbler lock is a way to keep things safe.

It uses flat metal parts called levers to stop a bolt from moving. Inside the lock, these levers sit in a row. They are often held in place by a spring.

A key has special cuts on it. When you put the key in, it lifts each lever. Each lever must move to a specific height to work. This height lets a part of the bolt slide through a gap.

If the levers are not at the right height, the bolt stays stuck. This keeps the door or safe closed.

Different locks use different amounts of levers. A three-lever lock is often used for simple privacy doors. A five-lever lock is much stronger. In Britain, people often use these for home security. Some locks for safes use even more. They might have seven or more levers to make them very secure.

Some locks even use a double-bitted key. This is a key with cuts on both sides. These locks are still used in many parts of the world today.
