Transport is split into three main parts. These are infrastructure, vehicles, and operations. Infrastructure includes fixed things like roads, rails, and pipelines. Terminals like airports and seaports help move people and cargo.

They also help with maintenance and refueling.

There are many different ways to move things.

People choose a mode based on cost and the route. A mode uses a specific vehicle and infrastructure together. Sometimes, a trip uses more than one mode. This is called inter-modal or multi-modal transport. Some transport uses human muscle power. This includes walking, running, or swimming.

You can also use bicycles or wheelchairs to move more easily. Animals can also help by pulling sleds or carrying packs. This is very useful in rough places where machines cannot go.

Moving through the air is very fast.

Fixed-wing aircraft, or airplanes, use air moving over wings to create lift. This lift helps them stay in the sky. Some planes are unmanned aerial vehicles, also called drones. These can be small or as large as a full airplane.

Rockets are actually the fastest way to travel. Commercial jets can reach speeds of 955 kilometres per hour. Other aircraft, called aerostats, use light gases to float. Balloons and blimps are types of aerostats. They use gases like helium to stay up.

Land transport is another huge part of our world.

It includes both road and rail systems. Roads allow for great flexibility for drivers. You can change lanes or directions very easily. As of 2015, there were 950 million passenger cars in the world.

Trains are often more energy efficient than cars. Some high-speed trains can travel at 350 km/h. In Shanghai, a maglev train can even reach 460 km/h.

Water transport uses watercraft to move over oceans and rivers.

A ship needs a hull to stay afloat. This part of the ship provides buoyancy. In the 19th century, people used steam engines to move ships. These engines used boilers fueled by wood or coal.
