Paintball is a competitive team shooting sport. Players aim to eliminate opponents from play. They do this by hitting them with spherical capsules. These capsules are called paintballs. They are filled with dye-filled gelatin. The paintballs break upon impact with a player.

To play, you need a paintball marker. This is the primary piece of equipment. Some people call it a paintball gun. It uses paintballs as ammunition. The marker must have a loader attached. This is also called a hopper. It feeds the paint into the marker. Some hoppers are gravity-fed. This means balls drop into the chamber. Others are electronically force-fed.

Modern markers use compressed air or carbon dioxide (CO2). Early markers used disposable 12-gram CO2 cartridges. These were similar to those used in pellet guns. Today, players use tanks of various sizes. Compressed air is often preferred for electronic markers. This is because unstable CO2 can damage pneumatic components.

Paintballs are very specific tools. They are spherical gelatin capsules. They contain polyethylene glycol and water-soluble substances. They also contain dye. The quality of a paintball depends on several factors. The shell must be brittle enough to break. The sphere must be very round. The fill must be thick and brightly colored. This makes the hit hard to hide.

Most paintballs used today are biodegradable. The ingredients are food-grade and harmless. Manufacturers are moving toward water-based formulas. They also prefer compressed air over CO2. This helps them become more eco-friendly.

Safety is the most important part of the sport. Every player must wear a protective mask.

These masks protect the eyes, mouth, and nose. Without a mask, players can suffer serious injury. Modern masks are less bulky than old designs. They protect against fogging and scratches. Players also use barrel-blocking safety equipment. Other gear helps with comfort and protection. Players wear gloves to protect their hands. They may wear elbow and knee pads. These pads prevent scrapes from the ground. Some players even wear hard-shelled armor. This protects them from bruising during close-range hits.

Paintball has a unique history. It began in Henniker, New Hampshire. The date was June 27, 1981. Two men invented it. Their names were Hayes Noel and Charles Gaines. Noel was a Wall Street stock trader. Gaines was an outdoorsman and writer. They had a debate about survival skills. They wondered if a city-dweller could survive in the woods. A friend saw an ad for Nel-Spot cattle marking guns. They used these guns to settle their argument.

They held the first "Survival Game" soon after. It involved 10 men in a capture the flag contest. The game took place in a 100-acre forest. A forester named G. Ritchie White won the game. He collected four flags in 2 hours and 15 minutes.

There are many ways to play the game. Rules are decided before play begins. One goal is capture the flag. Another is simple elimination. One style is called woodsball. This is played in natural environments. It covers very large areas.

Speedball is very fast. Games can last only 2 minutes and 15 seconds. There is also scenario paintball. This recreates historical or fictional settings. These games can last for days. Players might even use armored vehicles. These can be based on ATVs or go-karts.

Competitive paintball is highly organized. Many players join skill-based tournaments. These are often bracket tournaments. They usually involve 5-person teams.

The NXL holds events across the United States. They have different skill divisions. The Ultimate Woodsball League (UWL) uses large teams. They play on large wooded fields. In the United Kingdom, the CPPS is a leader. It only hosts tournament-style play. These games are timed and scored. Everything is played on sup air fields. These are inflatable bunkers on grass. This variety allows many different people to enjoy the sport.
