Many people call him the "Emperor of Distance Running." He is famous for running very long distances on tracks and roads. He won two Olympic gold medals in the 10,000 metre race. He also won four World Championship titles for that same distance. Haile is known for his amazing speed at the end of a race. He often used a fast "kick" to pass other runners.

His journey began with hard work on a farm in Asella. As a child, he ran ten kilometres to school every single morning. He ran the same distance back home every evening. This constant running gave him a unique way of moving. His left arm often looked crooked, as if he were still holding school books. He grew up as one of ten children. His mother passed away from cancer when he was only six years old. These early years helped build the strength he needed for his career.

Haile started winning big races in the early 1990s. In 1992, he won two races at the World Junior Championships in Seoul, South Korea. By 1993, he won his first of four World Championship titles in the 10,000 metres. During that 1993 race, a strange thing happened. He accidentally stepped on a runner named Moses Tanui. This caused Tanui's shoe to fly off his foot. Even with one shoe, Tanui ran far ahead for a while. However, Haile eventually caught up and won the race anyway.

Throughout his career, Haile broke many records. He set 27 world records in total. He also broke 61 Ethiopian national records. In 1995, he set a world record for the 10,000 metres in the Netherlands. Later, in 1998, he set a record for the 5,000 metres in Helsinki, Finland. He did this even though he was in great pain. In 2008, he won the Berlin Marathon with a record time of 2:03:59. This was 27 seconds faster than his own previous record.
