He is widely considered one of the greatest long-distance runners in history. Many fans call him the "Emperor of Distance Running." His career spanned many different types of racing. He competed in track races, cross country, and road marathons. He was famous for his incredible speed at the end of a race. This is often called a "kick." He used this burst of speed to pass competitors in the final moments.

Gebrselassie's endurance began during his childhood in Asella, Ethiopia. He grew up on a farm as one of ten children. Every day, he ran ten kilometres to school in the morning. He ran the same distance back home every evening. This repetitive movement created a unique running posture. His left arm often remained crooked. It looked as if he were still carrying his school books. His mother died from cancer when he was six years old. These early experiences built the foundation for his athletic life.

His international career began in the early 1990s. In 1992, he won the 5,000-metre and 10,000-metre races in Seoul, South Korea. These wins occurred at the World Junior Championships. In 1993, he won his first of four consecutive World Championship titles in the 10,000 metres. This specific race included a famous accident. Gebrselassie accidentally stepped on the heel of Moses Tanui. This caused Tanui's shoe to fly off. Despite running with only one shoe, Tanui led for a time. Gebrselassie eventually ran him down on the final straight to win.

Gebrselassie was a prolific record-breaker throughout his career. He set 27 world records in total. He also broke 61 Ethiopian national records. These records covered distances from 800 metres to the marathon. In 1995, he lowered the 10,000-metre world record by nine seconds in the Netherlands. In 1998, he set a 5,000-metre world record in Helsinki, Finland. He achieved this while running in great pain. He had to run a final 1,600 metres in 3:59.36 to secure the record.

His Olympic success is among the most significant in athletics. At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, he won the 10,000-metre gold medal. He defeated Paul Tergat by only 0.09 seconds. This margin was closer than a 100-metre dash final. Gebrselassie became only the third man to defend an Olympic 10,000-metre title. He achieved this after winning in Atlanta in 1996. However, an Achilles tendon injury hindered his attempt at a third straight gold in 2004. He finished fifth in the Athens Olympics due to this inflammation.

In the later part of his career, he transitioned to road racing. He became a dominant force in major city marathons. He won the Berlin Marathon four times consecutively. He also achieved three straight wins at the Dubai Marathon. In 2008, he won the Berlin Marathon with a world record time of 2:03:59. This time broke his own previous record by 27 seconds. This specific record stood for three years.

Beyond his running, Gebrselassie is a successful businessman. He uses his wealth to contribute to the development of Ethiopia. In 2011, New African cited him as one of the top 100 most influential Africans. His business life has faced challenges during periods of unrest. In 2020, during the Hachalu Hundessa riots, his hotels and resorts were burned. This resulted in 400 employees losing their jobs. Despite these hardships, he remains a major figure in African culture.

Gebrselassie's legacy connects sports to national identity. He helped conceptualize the Great Ethiopian Run. He also served on the IAAF Athletes Commission starting in 2003. His life demonstrates how individual discipline can influence a whole nation. He moved from a farm in Asella to the global stage. His career shows the transition from track mastery to road racing dominance. He remains an inspiration for distance runners everywhere.
