In ancient times, this hill was the heart of the Roman world. People saw the hill as a symbol of eternity. They believed it was indestructible and could never be destroyed. This special place was the center for many important ceremonies.

Long ago, many large temples stood on the top of the hill. The most famous one was the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus Capitolinus.

This temple was built in 509 BC. It was nearly as large as the famous Parthenon. Other temples were also there, like the temple of Juno Moneta. The hill even had a sacred area called the Vulcanal on its lower slopes. These buildings made the hill a grand and holy place for the people.

Many big events happened on this hill throughout history. During a raid by the Gauls in 390 BC, the hill stayed safe. This happened because Roman defenders had built strong walls there. Legend says that sacred geese belonging to Juno warned the Romans of the attack. Later, the famous leader Julius Caesar visited the hill. He even knelt before the temple of Jupiter to ask for good luck. However, the hill saw many changes and even some fires over the years.

In the 1500s, a famous artist named Michelangelo was asked to help.

He wanted to make the hill look grand and organized again. He designed a large open square called the Piazza del Campidoglio.

He used a shape called a trapezoid for the square. This helped the buildings look balanced even though the ground was sloped. He also designed a wide, stepped ramp called the cordonata to lead people up the hill.

Today, you can visit the hill to see amazing things. The buildings around the square are now called the Capitoline Museums.

The paving on the ground has a special pattern. It was finished in 1940 to match Michelangelo's old design. This hill connects the ancient past of Rome to the modern world we see today.
