Lasse Virén is a legendary long-distance runner from Finland. He is famous for winning four gold medals at the Summer Olympics. He won two medals in 1972 and two more in 1976. This feat is very rare in the world of sports. He helped bring back the fame of the "Flying Finns." These were great runners from Finland like Paavo Nurmi. Virén was named Finnish Sportsman of the Year in 1972 and 1976.

Running long races requires a very smart plan. Virén used a special method called "bend mathematics." This means he ran very close to the inner edge of the curves. By staying on the inside, he saved many metres of distance. Other runners often ran wide on the outer edges of the lane. This small habit gave him a big advantage over his rivals. It helped him save energy for the very end of the race.

Virén's journey to the top included many hard steps. He started his career at Brigham Young University in Utah. He ran for their cross-country team for one season. Later, he returned to his home in Finland. He trained very hard in Thomson's Falls, Kenya. This training helped him break the world record for the 2-mile run. He also became a very strong competitor on the international stage.

His 1972 Olympic Games in Munich were truly amazing. In the 10,000 metres, he actually fell during the twelfth lap. He did not give up and caught the leaders quickly. He won the race and broke a seven-year-old world record. He finished the race in 27:38.35. One week later, he won the 5,000 metres race too. He set another world record for that race in Helsinki.

Virén's success continued at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. He won both the 5,000 and 10,000 metre races again. People call this a "double double." After his win, he waved his running shoes to the crowd. He later competed in the marathon at the 1980 Olympics. After his running career ended, he became a politician. He served in the Finnish parliament from 1999 to 2007. He was also put into the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.
