Between 1967 and 1974, he won every backstroke race he entered. He won four European championships and three world championships in a row. He also set 19 world records and 28 European records. He was very fast in backstroke, butterfly, and medley events.

His swimming style was very special to watch. One of his rivals, John Naber, said his strokes were smooth. He also had a very powerful acceleration in the water.

Because he was so fast, people often knew he would win before the race ended. He competed in three Olympic Games: 1968, 1972, and 1976. In total, he won eight Olympic medals. These included four gold, two silver, and two bronze medals.

Roland had a very long and busy career. He was trained by a coach named Marlies Grohe. In 1973, he became the first person to hold both the 100 meter and 200 meter backstroke world titles. He won many medals in cities like Belgrade and Barcelona. In Barcelona, he won gold with his medley team.

He was also named East German Sportspersonality of the Year seven times. This was a big honor for him between 1967 and 1975.

After he finished swimming, Roland studied very hard. He studied sport sciences at DHfK in Leipzig from 1970 to 1977. Later, he studied medicine at the University of Jena from 1978 to 1984.

He became an orthopedic surgeon. An orthopedic surgeon is a doctor who helps people with their bones. He also married Kornelia Ender, who was also an Olympic swimmer.

There were some hard questions about sports in East Germany during his time. Many people talked about doping, which is using certain substances to swim faster. Roland said he was not part of that system. He said his swimming club was too small for that.

Roland lived a long life and died in 2019 at age 69. He was even put into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1981. His skill in the water will be remembered for a long time.
