Virén was a very smart runner. He used something called "bend mathematics." This means he ran near the inside edge of the curves. This helped him save many metres during a race. It also helped him save his energy.

In the 1972 Olympics, he had a tough race. He fell down during the 10,000 metres race. He still caught up to the other runners. He even broke a world record that day. Later, he won the 5,000 metres race too.

At the 1976 Olympics, he won both races again. This is called a "double double." After his win, he waved his shoes to the crowd. He was a great athlete. He was even named Finnish Sportsman of the Year. Later in life, he worked in the Finnish parliament. He was a leader for his country.
