He also broke the world record for his sport four times. For nine years, he was never beaten in a competition.

His journey into the decathlon happened by chance. At first, Thompson wanted to be a professional football player. He joined the Newham and Essex Beagles club to train as a sprinter. His coach, Bob Mortimer, suggested he try the decathlon. This happened because one of the team's decathletes had chickenpox. Thompson won his very first decathlon in Cwmbran, Wales. He won his next competition too. This helped him start a very successful career in athletics.

Thompson's life began in Notting Hill, London. His father was British Nigerian and his mother was Scottish. His first name, Ayodelé, is a Yoruba word. It means "joy comes home." He attended Farney Close Boarding School in Sussex. During his career, he won many big titles. He won three Commonwealth titles and several European Championships. He was also the first person to hold Olympic, World, and European titles all at once.

In the 1980s, Thompson was a huge star. He won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award in 1982. He even appeared in commercials for a drink called Lucozade. Three different computer games were made about him by Ocean Software. These games were called Daley Thompson's Decathlon, Supertest, and Olympic Challenge. He was very good at many specific events. He had great scores in the 100 meters and the long jump. He also performed well in the shot put and the high jump.

After he stopped competing in athletics, he tried many new things. He played football for teams like Mansfield Town and Stevenage Borough. He even tried motor racing in a Peugeot 106. He competed in the 1993 National Saloon Car Cup. Thompson also became a fitness coach and a motivational speaker. He even opened his own gym called Daley Fitness in London. His son, Elliot, followed in his footsteps. Elliot became a national decathlon champion in 2022.
