Climbing often requires great skill and patience. In 1951, Bonatti finished a very hard climb. He climbed the east face of the Grand Capucin. This was a tall wall made of red granite. The team faced many storms during their attempts. They even had to spend time in hanging bivouacs. A bivouac is a temporary place to rest on a mountain. They finally finished the climb and returned safely to the hut.

In 1954, he was part of an Italian team. He and a partner, Amir Mehdi, carried oxygen to a high camp. However, the camp was placed in a different spot than planned. They could not reach the tent in the dark. They had to survive an open bivouac without a tent. This was a very dangerous and difficult night. For many years, people argued about what happened there.
