Climbing mountains was a very hard job for Tabei. She had to find ways to pay for her expensive trips. She taught piano lessons to earn enough money. She even made her own gear from things at home. Tabei made waterproof gloves from a car cover. She also sewed her own trousers from old curtains. She worked very hard to reach her big goals.

Tabei started climbing when she was only ten years old.

She went on a climbing trip to Mount Nasu. Later, she joined many men's climbing clubs in Japan. Some men were not kind to her. They thought women should not be in the sport. Because of this, Tabei started the Joshi-Tohan Club in 1969. This was a special club just for women climbers.

In 1975, Tabei led a team to climb Mount Everest. The group was called the Japanese Women's Everest Expedition. During the climb, a large snow slide called an avalanche hit their camp. Tabei was buried under the snow for a short time. Luckily, the sherpa guides dug her out safely. She was hurt, but she did not stop. On May 16, 1975, she reached the top of the mountain.

Tabei did many kind things after her famous climbs. She worked to clean up trash left by climbers on Everest. She also led mountain trips for children after the Great East Japan Earthquake. People all over the world remember her great work. An asteroid named 6897 Tabei honors her name.
