He was born in 1912 in a place called Hüttenberg. Harrer loved the outdoors and studied geography and sports at a university. He was a very skilled skier and even won a world championship in 1937. One of his biggest goals was to climb a very difficult mountain face. He wanted to be the first person to climb the North Face of the Eiger. This mountain is in the Swiss Alps and has a steep wall of ice.

In July 1938, Harrer and his friend Fritz Kasparek began their big climb. They met two other German climbers named Ludwig Vörg and Anderl Heckmair. The four men decided to work together as one team. The climb was very dangerous because of falling rocks and snow avalanches. They even got caught in an avalanche while climbing a part called the White Spider. Despite these hard times, they reached the summit at four o'clock on July 24, 1938. This huge success made headlines all over the world.

During this time, Harrer was also part of the Nazi Party and the SS. He held the rank of Sergeant. After the successful climb, he was even met by Adolf Hitler. Later, Harrer went on an expedition to the Himalayas in 1939. Because of World War II, British authorities arrested him in India. He was kept in a detention camp for a long time. Harrer and his friend Peter Aufschnaiter eventually escaped from the camp. They traveled through difficult land to reach Tibet in 1944.
