He was born in Vienna in 1908 to a middle-class family. His family had a long history of serving in the military. As a young student, he was a skilled fencer. During one match, he received a large scar on his cheek. This scar was from a duel, which was a type of formal fight. He spoke several languages, including German, French, and English.

Skorzeny became a leader of special units that used tricky methods. He developed ideas for unconventional warfare, which means fighting in unusual ways. He trained soldiers to work deep behind enemy lines. These soldiers practiced sabotage, which is when people damage things to stop an enemy. They also practiced espionage, which is the act of spying. His units sometimes wore the uniforms of their enemies to hide.

This was part of a plan called Operation Greif. He also led a unit called the Friedenthal special forces.

One of his most famous missions was to rescue a leader. Benito Mussolini was the leader of Italy. In 1943, Mussolini was being held by his own people. He was kept in a hotel high in the mountains.

Skorzeny and 16 other men used gliders to reach the hotel. Gliders are special planes that do not have engines. They landed near the hotel at the Gran Sasso massif. The mission was successful, and they rescued Mussolini without a fight.

Some people said this was a real plot, but Skorzeny said it never happened. He also helped with Operation Armoured Fist in 1944. This mission involved kidnapping a man to change the leaders in Hungary. In 1941, he was also part of the fighting in the Soviet Union. After the war ended, Skorzeny faced a military court in 1947. He was accused of breaking the 1907 Hague Convention. This is a set of rules for how countries should act during war. The court decided he was not guilty. He escaped from a camp in 1948 and lived in several places. He stayed in places like Paris and Salzburg before moving to Spain.
