He worked at the Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp. He was a doctor who helped make terrible choices. He was part of a team that performed selections. This meant they chose who would live and who would die. Many people were sent to gas chambers immediately. This included children, pregnant women, and the elderly. Mengele was known to act with a smile during these tasks.

He wanted to study human heredity and genetics. He focused on specific groups of people for his tests. He looked for identical twins and people with physical differences. He even studied children with certain diseases. He built a laboratory near a crematorium for his work. He sent specimens from his studies to other researchers. These experiments were very cruel and caused much harm.

After the war, Mengele tried to hide from the world. He fled to Argentina in July 1949. He later moved to Paraguay in 1959 and Brazil in 1960. Many people tried to find him, including Nazi hunters like Simon Wiesenthal. They wanted him to face a trial for his actions. Mengele died in 1979 after he drowned while swimming.
