Harry Benjamin was a doctor who changed how we care for people. He was an endocrinologist, which is a specialist in hormones. He also studied sexology, the study of human sex. He is most famous for his work with transgender people. These are individuals whose gender identity feels different from their physical bodies.

Benjamin spent his life helping people find peace with who they are. He was known for being a very kind and respectful doctor.

His way of working was very special. He used a step-by-step approach to help his patients. In 1948, he met a young patient in San Francisco. This child was born male but felt like a girl. Benjamin decided to use estrogen to help. Estrogen is a hormone that can have a calming effect.

He also worked with many experts like surgeons and psychiatrists. Together, they helped hundreds of people live better lives. He often helped his patients without asking for any money.

Benjamin's journey began in Berlin, Germany. He was born there on January 12, 1885. He earned his medical degree in Tübingen in 1912. He moved to the United States in 1913 to work. However, a war in 1914 stopped his ship mid-Atlantic.

He had to use his last dollars to return to America. He stayed in the United States for the rest of his life. He lived to be 101 years old.

He moved his medical office to many places in New York. He worked at 728 Park Avenue starting in 1937. Later, he moved to 44 East 67th Street. He also kept an office in San Francisco at 450 Sutter Street.

In 1966, he published a very important book. It was called "The Transsexual Phenomenon." This book explained his methods to the whole world. It was the first large work on this subject.

Many things we know today started with his work. A person named Christine Jorgensen helped bring these ideas to the public. An industrialist named Reed Erickson also helped. Erickson started the Erickson Educational Foundation to fund medical research.

This support led to the Harry Benjamin Foundation. Later, a group called WPATH was formed to set standards for care. These groups still help transgender people today. Benjamin's kindness left a lasting mark on medicine.
