He studied many subjects like medicine and philosophy. He is remembered as one of the most influential sexologists of the 20th century. A sexologist is a scientist who studies how people feel and love. Hirschfeld wanted to use science to help people live better lives. He believed that understanding people would make the world more kind.

His work often focused on helping sexual minorities. He believed that being gay was a natural thing that happens in biology. To prove this, he studied many different cultures around the world. He even visited exhibitions in Berlin to talk to people from many lands. He wanted to see if people everywhere felt the same way. This helped him write a large book about men and women in 1914.

Hirschfeld's path as an activist began with a very sad event. In 1896, a young man he was treating took his own life. The man felt great shame because of his feelings for other men. This moment changed Hirschfeld's life forever. He decided to fight for the rights of people like his patient. He wrote a pamphlet to argue that these feelings should not be against the law.

He was very busy building groups to help his cause. In 1897, he started the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee. He worked with people like Max Spohr and Eduard Oberg to lead it. The group wanted to change a law called Paragraph 175. This law made it a crime to be gay in Germany. Hirschfeld gathered 6,000 signatures from famous people to help change this law. Many smart people like Albert Einstein signed his petition.

Later in his life, things became very difficult and dangerous. The Nazi government took away his German citizenship in 1933. They attacked his institute and burned his many books.

This was a very hard time for his science and his work. Hirschfeld had to leave Germany to find safety in France. He lived in Nice and died there in 1935.
