Harry Benjamin was a doctor from Germany. He moved to America in 1914. He was a specialist in hormones. We call this field endocrinology. He also studied sexology. This is the study of human sex.

Benjamin helped many transgender people. These are people whose gender feels different from their body. In the 1940s, he saw a young patient in San Francisco. This case changed his work. He used a medicine called estrogen. This medicine helped the child feel calm.

Many doctors back then did not understand these people. Some doctors used harsh treatments. Benjamin chose a kinder way. He worked with many experts. He helped hundreds of patients. He often did not take money from them.

In 1966, he wrote a big book. It was called "The Transsexual Phenomenon." This book helped explain how to help people. A man named Reed Erickson helped fund medical work for these patients. This work led to new groups that help people today. Benjamin was a very kind man. He lived to be 101 years old.
