These men were masters of close harmony. This means their voices blended perfectly together. Sometimes, it sounded like the individual singers could appear and disappear. They sang many kinds of music. They sang folk songs and classical songs. They also sang popular songs of the day.

The group became very popular in Europe. They even traveled to the United States. They appeared in 21 films. However, the group faced hard times. The Nazi government made life difficult for them. Some members were Jewish. The leaders banned certain songs. They even stopped the group from performing in public.

The group split up after 1934. Some members moved to Vienna to start new groups. Others stayed in Germany. They never reached the same success as the original group. People remembered their music again much later. A film made in 1975 helped people find their songs again. Today, people still enjoy their unique sound.
