He is most known for his role at the Auschwitz II-Birkenau concentration camp. There, he performed medical experiments on prisoners and participated in selections. These selections decided who would be sent to work and who would be killed. His actions during the Holocaust earned him the nickname "the Angel of Death." He spent much of his later life hiding from justice.

Mengele's career began with intense academic study. He earned doctorates in both anthropology and medicine. In 1935, he received a PhD in anthropology from the University of Munich. His dissertation focused on using lower jaw measurements to determine race. This was based on the pseudoscience of scientific racism. In 1937, he earned a medical doctorate from the University of Frankfurt. He worked as an assistant to Otmar Freiherr von Verschuer, a geneticist. Mengele studied how certain traits, like a cleft chin, were passed down through families.

When World War II began, Mengele joined the military as a medical officer. He served with the 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking on the Soviet front. His unit participated in the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. During this time, his division was involved in a pogrom against Jewish civilians. Historians estimate that thousands of people were killed during this period. Mengele was wounded in action near Rostov-on-Don in mid-1942. After he recovered, he was promoted to the rank of captain in April 1943. He then applied to work in the concentration camp service.

Mengele arrived at Auschwitz in May 1943. He was appointed chief physician of the Romani family camp at Birkenau. His duties involved overseeing inmate doctors and managing hospital barracks. He often visited the selection ramp to choose who would enter the camp. He looked for specific people to help his research, such as twins or doctors. During selections, he decided which arrivals were fit for labor. Those deemed unfit, including most children and the elderly, were sent to gas chambers.

He used the prisoners at Auschwitz to conduct human experimentation. He set up a pathology laboratory attached to Crematorium II. His research focused on heredity and genetics using human subjects. He was particularly interested in identical twins and people with physical abnormalities. He also studied people with heterochromia iridum, which is having eyes of two different colors. He studied blood proteins and the Romani population. He even conducted studies on children with the disease noma.

After the war ended, Mengele fled to avoid being held accountable. In July 1949, he moved to Argentina with help from former SS members. He lived in Buenos Aires before moving to Paraguay in 1959. By 1960, he had moved to Brazil. He remained a fugitive while being sought by West Germany and Israel. Nazi hunters, such as Simon Wiesenthal, worked to find him for trial. Even clandestine operations by the Mossad intelligence agency failed to capture him.

Mengele's life ended in 1979 when he drowned off the coast of Bertioga, Brazil. He had suffered a stroke while swimming. At the time, he was living under the false name Wolfgang Gerhard. His identity remained a mystery for several years. In 1985, his remains were disinterred and examined by forensic experts. Finally, in 1992, DNA analysis confirmed that the remains were indeed his. His life remains a significant example of how science can be misused for harm.
