He was responsible for the deaths of many people. His actions caused great suffering during the Second World War. He worked at several different concentration camps in Europe. These were places where people were held and treated very badly. History remembers him as a war criminal.

Kramer's work followed a path through many camps. He started as a guard at Dachau in 1934. Later, he held senior posts at Sachsenhausen and Mauthausen. In May 1944, Kramer moved to Auschwitz-Birkenau. This was the main part of the Auschwitz complex. He was a Captain, or Hauptsturmführer, at this time. His job was to manage the gassings of new groups of people. Witnesses said he was a very harsh leader. He would beat people if they tried to resist him. He even threatened doctors who did not follow his orders.

In December 1944, he was sent to Bergen Belsen. This camp was near a village in Germany. It was used for people who were ill or displaced. Kramer was so cruel that inmates called him the "Beast of Belsen."

By March 1945, there were 60,000 people in the camp. Many people died every day from a sickness called typhus. The camp became a very dark and difficult place to live.

The British Army arrived to liberate the camp in April 1945.
